Lucy in the Larder

On a long ferry ride to Mykonos – at one of the stops, men board the boat carrying giant white baskets of boxed Turkish delight and paper wrapped nougat (took us a while to work out what he was selling above all the loud bargaining going on).

Groups of women gather around buying them by the dozen… I have to try the nougat.

It’s like a giant sandwich of holy communion filled with fresh, soft taffy nougat and roasted almonds. Breaking it in half almost feels sacrilegious – the gooey glistening nougat clinging to the wafer and almonds… Mmmm.
